#1. How did you get your start in SEO?

KP: I started my marketing career in PPC, and buying ads on Google and Yahoo led to clients asking about organic rankings. I guess you can say I started with SEO because it was an obvious need and no one else was offering to do it.

#2. What do you love most about Kansas City?

KP: Kansas City is above all a great place to have a family and raise my two kids. As a marketing professional, I feel doubly blessed because KC has some great agencies with very talented people. People think you have to be on the coast and work for a large agency to work great work, but KC proves that is just not true.

#3. What is an instance of failure as a business owner…and how did you overcome it?

KP: As a subject matter expert in a rapidly changing and broad industry, it’s hard to keep up with all the changes. Filtering what is right and wrong, especially on copyright laws, was a tough lesson.

One example of a screw up was embedding and citing an image on a blog post we developed for a client. The blog copy was 100% original, but we wanted to embed an image that was readily shared all over social media, directories, and national press. It was everywhere and we thought it was under Fair Use to use as well.

Using that image introduced me to the screwed up and antiquated laws in our country when the photographer sent me an invoice for the image. I owned the mistake and everything ended fine, but it was a crazy lesson to learn that just about any social media has broken the law. Technically the people sharing photos on Pinterest and Facebook all day are breaking copyright laws. The moral of the story is be careful with content that is not yours before you share it.

Bonus Question Round!

What is a fun fact about you?

KP: I’m left handed but I mouse with my right.

What do you like to do when you’re not killing it on Google?

KP: I try to get to the lake with friends and family as often as I can in the summer.
